Spotify, an online music streaming platform, has celebrated Nigerian music star, David Adeleke, popularly known as “Davido”, in commemoration of the 10th anniversary of his debut album, “Omo Baba Olowo: The Genesis”.

Phiona Okumu, Spotify’s music director for sub-Saharan Africa, said in a statement Friday that this will come before July 17, when Davido’s debut album would be 10 years old.

Okumu said that Spotify, in awe of the music star, decided to share some of the details behind his iconic debut album, “Omo Baba Olowo: The Genesis.”

“Sunday July 17, 2022 marks the 10th anniversary of Davido’s debut album, Omo Baba Olowo: The Genesis.

“His decade-long career has seen him rise from emerging pop star to global icon, with an endless list of hits and collaborations across continents.

“These collaborations have been with international hitmakers like Nicki Minaj, Summer Walker, Chris Brown, Nas, Lil Baby, Sauti Sol, Focalistic, Uhuru and most recently Kanye West’s Sunday Service Choir,” he said.

Okumu said the 17-track album, released in 2012, is now considered one of the groundbreaking projects that lit the way for modern African music.

She said this inspired a new era of young African musicians who were taking over the world today.

“The title of the album in Yoruba language means “The son of a rich father” and alludes to his father’s wealth.

“Davido, now one of Africa’s top earners in music, has stepped out of his father’s shadow and created a story for himself, having built his own wealth and following around the world,” he said.

According to her, Davido has become more than an artist, but also a trendsetter who has brought several budding African artists to mainstream stardom, either offering free verse or co-signing through his independent label, Davido.
