Image Merchants Promotions Limited (IMPR), Publishers of PRNigeria, Economic Confidential and other titles, has kickstarted an internship program for Mass Communication students of the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, who have been on forced holiday since the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) embarked on strike five months ago.

The first physical session took place on Tuesday at the PRNigeria Centre in Wuye District, Abuja, with a number of the students, who had for some weeks been enjoying some virtual training, in attendance.

The students were welcomed by the the Publisher/CEO of IMPR, Alhaji Yushau Shuaib, who said the Centre was the perfect place for them to be groomed on the rudiments of journalism and for them to learn how to build a brilliant career in Public Relations as well.

The Managing Editor of IMPR, Mr Abdulrahman Abdulraheem, who chaired the interactive session informed the participants about the basics of news writing and reporting, and feature writing.

For some of them who had the ambition to be PR professionals, the Editor urged them to build a career in journalism first and become great writers before venturing into PR.

“The only way you can make a decent career in journalism is to be a great writer and the only way you can become one is to be an avid reader, and develop a habit or passion for reading extensively,” he said.

After listening to the students speak on their preferred areas of Mass Communication, career goal, vision and ambition, he asked them to use the popular journalistic saying that “Not every story is News but all news items are stories” to discuss the elements and qualities of news, using the recent sex scandal of Apostle Johnson Suleiman as case study.

The students performed brilliantly in their tasks as the tutor, alongside other staff members, officially inducted them into a platform created under IMPR, ‘Entertainment Digest’ where they will be working in the course of their internship.
