Núñez on Fire as Liverpool Humble City 3-1 in Community Shield

Liverpool FC have won the first grudge match of the season against rivals Manchester City to clinch the 2022 Community Shield.

The Reds won English football’s traditional curtain raiser with a first goal on English soil for £85million record signing Darwin Nunez – while Manchester City’s new golden boy Erling Haaland drew a blank and even failed to score from five yards.

Jurgen Klopp, who has completed his collection of domestic trophies, watched his side dominate and lead at half-time through a cracker from Trent Alexander-Arnold.

City’s other newbie striker Julian Alvarez came off the bench to level but Liverpool went back in front through Mo Salah’s 83rd-minute penalty – after VAR ruled that Ruben Dias had handled.

The loudest cheer came right at the end when the electric Nunez stooped to score Liverpool’s third to fulfil Ian Rush’s pre-match prediction of 3-1 and ensuring the “Kop End” of the King Power stadium was filled with red smoke as they celebrated

It was the third trophy of 2022 for Liverpool but the quality of football on show for both teams underlined it’s going to be nearly impossible for anyone to catch them and we should be in for another epic title race between the two great rivals.

With Haaland and Nunez grabbing the pre-match headlines, Mo Salah wasted little time in reminding everyone he remains a hot property himself.
