The 2023 MTV Video Music Awards have been won by American pop diva Selena Gomez, Nigerian musical prodigy Rema, and Jonzing World sensation Rema.

The group won the first-ever Best Afrobeats award for their massive single “Calm Down.”

The song won the Best Afrobeats category, beating out Ayra Starr’s “Rush,” Burna Boy’s “It’s Plenty,” Davido and Musa Key’s “Unavailable,” Libianca’s “People,” Wizkid and Ayra Starr’s “2 Sugar,” and Fireboy DML’s “Bandana.”

Both the “best collaboration” and “song of the year” categories nominated “Calm Down” for an award.

With his song “Calm Down,” which features Selena Gomez, Rema became the first African artist to exceed one billion Spotify streams. This victory follows that historic accomplishment.

Rema thanked Selena Gomez, his team, his fans, and the pioneers of Nigerian music, including 2Baba, Don Jazzy, D’Banj, D’Prince, Runtown, Timaya, Wizkid, Burna Boy, and Davido, in his speech. He also thanked the younger generation for continuing the trend and pushing Afrobeats to new heights.
