First Album

Onwenu’s first album with Polygram, In The Morning Light, was released in 1984. Recorded in London, it featured the track “Masterplan” written by close friend Tyna Onwudiwe who had previously contributed to Onwenu’s BBC documentary and subsequently sang back-up vocals on the album.

 

Chart-Topping Hit – “One Love” (1986)

“One Love,” one of Onwenu’s most famous songs, became an anthem of unity and hope. Its uplifting message and catchy melody solidified her status as a leading figure in African music.

 

Release of “Dancing in the Sun” (1988)

The album “Dancing in the Sun” featured some of Onyeka’s most beloved tracks. It received critical acclaim and further cemented her place as a top artist in Nigeria.

 

Advocacy and Political Career

Onyeka Onwenu was a passionate advocate for women’s rights and social justice. She served as the Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer of the National Centre for Women Development in Nigeria, where she worked tirelessly to improve the lives of women and children.

 

 Onyeka’s prominent footprints in Nollywood

Onyeka who doubled as an actress in her lifetime featured in prominent movies like “Half Of A Yellow Sun” (2013). In this adaptation of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s novel, Onyeka Onwenu played the role of Odenigbo’s (Chiwetel Ejiofor) strong-willed mother,

 

In “Lionheart” (2018): Directed by Genevieve Nnaji, Onyeka portrayed Abigail Obiagu, the supportive mother of Adaeze and Obiora, and wife of Chief Ernest Obiagu.

 

In God Calling“ (2018) Onyeka played Mama Francis, the mother of Karibi Fubara’s character. The film also stars Zainab Balogun and Richard Mofe–Damijo.

 

“Obara ‘M (My Blood)” (2023) For “Obara ‘M(My Blood)” Onyeka portrayed Nwakaego in this musical drama, which follows the journey of a rising music star, Oluchi.

In 2006, she won the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her performance in the movie “Widow’s Cot.” That same year, she was also nominated for the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role for her work in the movie “Rising Moon.”

Music Show Judge

In 2013, Onwenu served as one of the three judges on X Factor Nigeria.

Release of Autobiography – “My Father’s Daughter” (2020)

In her autobiography, “My Father’s Daughter,” Onyeka shares personal stories and reflections on her life and career. The book provides an intimate look at the experiences that shaped her into the icon she is today.

 UN Goodwill Ambassador

Onyeka Onwenu’s efforts in social activism earned her the prestigious role of United Nations Goodwill Ambassador. Her work focused on promoting peace, education, and women’s rights, both in Nigeria and internationally.

Rose Of Sharon Foundation Board Of Trustee Member

In 2022, Onyeka released ‘Rise Up,’ a song written and produced in partnership with the Rose of Sharon Foundation (RoSF). Till her death she was a member of the Rose of Sharon Foundation’s board of trustees. She pledged her support for RoSF mission to continue to create socioeconomic empowerment for thousands of widows and orphans through several programs that ensure greater self-esteem and ease of socio-economic integration.

 

 Collaboration with King Sunny Ade

Her collaboration with the legendary King Sunny Ade on the song “Choices” is another highlight of her career. The fusion of their styles created a timeless classic.
