On March 22, Muslims throughout the world began the reflective month of Ramadan. The world’s largest music streaming service, Spotify, supported its spiritual journey by creating a special Ramadan hub filled with inspiring and meditative material.

Along with the hub, the platform’s data presents a fascinating picture of how audio consumption, including listening to music and podcasts, evolves to reflect this time in users’ lives.

The data, which was gathered from eight important markets including Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Pakistan, Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya, and Indonesia, clearly demonstrates a shift towards a more contemplative, spiritual tone.

“Music and storytelling, which is what podcasting is, are deeply ingrained in the way we experience the world, whether it be how we celebrate or, in the case of Ramadan, how we reflect on the many facets of our lives,” claims Jocelyne Muhutu-Remy, managing director of Spotify SSA. Since religion and spirituality are extremely private matters, we are honoured that people use Spotify to share these aspects of their lives.
