Excessive displays of riches during parties and festivals are frequent in Nigeria, where extravagance and entertainment go hand in hand. In the midst of the flash and sparkle, there is a culture of “money spraying,” when people, especially celebrities, throw money onto dancers and entertainers as a display of goodwill and wealth. But some people take this habit too far, which draws criticism for being wasteful and ostentatious.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has in recent times tightened the noose on some celebrities who perpetrate this habit and abuse the national currency. Popular cross dresser, Idris Okuneye, otherwise called ‘Bobrisky’ was recently arraigned and jailed for six months for the offence of Naira abuse. Nigerians have however questioned the decision to single out Bobrisky for an offence that is the stock in trade of many celebrities.
